The Data Protection Authority wants to establish a supervisory arrangement with the tax authorities to sustainably improve the protection of the personal data of citizens and companies. The AP expects supervision to last five years. This is what Secretary of State Van Rij writes in a letter to the House of Representatives. The AP is establishing a supervisory arrangement to monitor and control the actions of the tax authorities, but also to provide guidance in sustainably improving the protection of personal data. In doing so, the AP will focus on various themes, such as the use of risk models, the culture within the tax authorities with regard to dealing with personal data, the exchange of data and the state of the privacy organization. For example, the AP can make agreements with the tax authorities about carrying out interim audits on new processes and systems. In addition, the supervisory arrangement is aimed at strengthening the privacy organization so that the tax authorities can make a structural improvement when it comes to protecting personal data. In order to carry out the activities that are necessary to carry out and be effective, the AP expects the supervisory arrangement to last five years. Every year, an evaluation will take place to determine what improvements have been achieved by the tax authorities and what additional actions are still needed. Based on the exploratory discussions between the AP and employees of the tax authorities started in April 2024, the AP will further implement its approach.Source: Letter to Parliament for the Supervision Arrangement of the Data Protection Authority at the Tax Administration, No. 2024-0000332185, Ministry of Finance, May 28, 2024
