A benefits affair that has stopped lives
The benefits affair was not just about recoveries or systems. It was about people. Thousands of parents were unfairly labeled as fraudsters, lost their jobs, their relationships were strained and ended up in deep debt.
Behind each file, there is a family that fought for justice for years. And behind each number are children who grew up in stress, insecurity or poverty — sometimes even removed from their home situation.
I've been involved in this topic since 2019 and will continue to research the causes, the impact and the lessons we need to learn from it.
Where it went wrong
The affair was caused by a combination of strict policy, inadequate control, system errors and discriminatory risk selection. Parental contributions of a few euros were seen as fraud. Evidence was ignored. Appeal procedures were opaque. The government held to a hard line for years, while the human consequences remained out of the picture.

The benefits affair is not an abstract file. It's about people, families and lives that came to a standstill. A few figures that show the size:
De meest recente cijfers zijn te vinden op de website van Herstel Toeslagen, onder het kopje feiten en cijfers.
Niet alle cijfers zijn volledig bekend. Het aantal ondernemers is in een rapport uit 2021 gedestilleerd. Niet alleen zijn ondernemers met toeslagenterugvorderingen geraakt. Ook zijn er veel ondernemers geraakt, zoals de kinderopvanginstellingeigenaren.
De cijfers m.b.t. de uithuisgeplaatste kinderen zijn ook niet correct. De cijfers zijn vanaf 2015 geregistreerd. Er mist minstens 10 jaar. Ook zijn de cijfers bekend toen het aantal gedupeerde ouders de helft lager was. Ik heb hier zelf tijdens mijn studie nderzoek naar gedaan. Binnenkort publiceer ik mijn bevindingen. Ook het aantal overleden ouders en kinderen is niet te vinden in de cijfers. Het laatst bekende cijfer is in het rapport van de Commissie van Dam te vinden. Dit is van bijna 18 maanden geleden. Dagelijks komen er nieuwe aanmeldingen.

More than money: the human consequences
The damage wasn't just financial. Parents talked about sleepless nights, shame, loss of work, mental health problems and years of uncertainty.
For children, it meant stress, instability and, in some cases, even removals.
Many families are still trying to rebuild their lives.
That's why my research continues — because the impact is significant and recovery requires time, understanding and transparency.

DIGITAL COVER-UP: AT LEAST 64 MILLION DOCUMENTS CONTAINING CRUCIAL INFORMATION FOUND AFTER SEVEN YEARS
State Secretaries Sandra Palmen-Schlangen and Eelco Eerenberg have announced that an investigation is being launched into the digital safe containing at least 64 million documents discovered “in July 2025”. The vault (this is a storage environment closed to employees: the Q drives) contains information that was made untraceable seven years earlier. Not available provided with WOO requests and inquiries. Not available to parents and entrepreneurs who received reviews. The House of Representatives of the States General was also unaware.

BANKRUPTCY CHILDCARE INSTITUTION & REINTEGRATION AGENCY MOTHER M. AND DAUGHTER L. Mother and daughter have a childcare institution and a reintegration studio in the Municipality of D. After more than 50 years of doing business, the company is going under. An unpaid bill from the Municipality of D. plays a major role. Daughter L. is suspected of fraud with benefits. Meanwhile, an alderman is stalking with text messages. Supervision by GGD and Police will follow. Her reputation as an entrepreneur has now been seriously damaged. Even the Rotary shows her the door. She can't find a job at her level anymore, after her bankruptcy. Her mother can't do it all anymore, there is a great fear that her grandson will be removed from home. Her daughter is also in constant danger.
