The tax authorities had data that could have prevented people from being unfairly recognized as victims in the benefits scandal. But that information was only discovered last fall. This is what a spokesperson for Secretary of State Sandra Palmen (Allowances, NSC) confirms after a message from NRC.

Since the benefits affair, many Dutch people have become cautious about applying for surcharges or other arrangements. Municipalities want to regain trust, and they all do that in their own way, as shown in the video above.

Whether the information found is actually useful in assessing whether someone has been duped or not is still being investigated. Nor is it clear how many people may have been wrongly recognized as victims. The counter where people could report has now closed. More than 40,000 people have been classified as duped.

30,000 euro compensation

Those who could plausibly have been the victim of the derailed hunt for fraud with the childcare allowance received at least 30,000 euros in compensation after a “light test”. That money never has to be paid back. The then cabinet took for granted that the government ran a significant risk of overcompensation as a result.

The cabinet hopes to have financially compensated all more than 41,000 victims of the benefits affair by 2027. This year, all parents must be assessed.
