NSC leader Pieter Omtzigt calls discontinuing the Laurentien method 'painful'

Princess Laurentien and the Ministry of Finance have clashed about how to handle the benefits affair. With the “Laurentien method”, the princess created a new method for determining additional damage. This method is now being discontinued by the cabinet. “It's painful because the group that causes the biggest damage is constantly stuck,” says NSC leader Pieter Omtzigt in the WNL Op Zondag television program on NPO1.Omtzigt: “Princess Laurentien and the tax authorities are struggling enormously with the group of people who have lost their homes, lost children and how to compensate them now. That results in harrowing stories from people who have to show receipts.”

Laurentien method

With the Laurentien method, parents receive an average of 128,000 euros. “130,000 euros is a lot than the average, but it's not as much as the cases that have lost their home or children end up there,” Omtzigt responds. Are you already receiving our free newsletter? “Choose one system”

Henri Bontenbal, political leader of the CDA, believes that the new cabinet should choose one system. “Constantly changing new forms causes a lot of disappointment and bureaucracy. There must be one good approach. Parliament should stick to that and not make adjustments all the time.”Listen to the WNL Op Zondag broadcast as a podcast now! Text continues below.

Pieter Omtzigt shares the view that there should be a single system, but criticises the Real Injury Commission, where parents can go to claim compensation. “The committee is not functioning at all. Either the committee should function or there must be a way to reach a good solution within a few years,” says the NSC leader.
