There seems to be no end to the suffering for the victims of the benefits affair. By suspending the Foundation (Equal) worthy Recovery method, many families are in trouble again. This includes Kimberly Anasagasti. She tells her story Heart of the Netherlands.
Allowance method
The approach of the SGH Foundation, set up by Princess Laurentien, was tried out with around three hundred victims last year. This allows the parents to tell their own story, after which experts use a so-called “check list” with fixed amounts per claim to determine how much additional damage they have suffered.
Victim parents have already received 30,000 euros once, but this is not enough for many families to stay afloat. The SGH Foundation's plan should have ensured that damage repair would go faster. However, it recently became clear that SGH's allowance method costs too much money, around 31 million euros more than initially thought. The outgoing cabinet only embraces the benefit recovery after adjustments have been made.
Hard blow for Kimberly
The suspension of the allowance method came as a strong blow to Kimberly Anasagasti, one of the many victims of the allowance affair. “I would have had the feedback conversation with the foundation before 4 June and then the amount would also become clear. So you expect that call, but then you get the message that it has been stopped.”
The decision of the outgoing cabinet caused a lot of tears for the young family: “I was crying that day. You take many steps to get rid of the problems you're in, but you just become a victim again. You want to get out of that role as a victim, but that blow pushes you back into that role and you have to start fighting again.” Kristel de Waal, member of the Parents' Committee on Childcare Allowance, reacts angrily to the decision of the outgoing cabinet: “There was finally a prospect of a deal and now the brakes have been put on that again, that's really bad. We want clarity before the recess, you can't leave those people dangling until after the summer.”
Difficult period
Anasagasti explains in Heart of the Netherlands having been through hell in the past few years. “It all started in 2009. My son had to go to daycare, I had to go to work. I was then soon told that all my income would be seized and surcharges. The letters kept coming. In total, it was 48,000 euros in debt.” Overwhelmed with emotions, she continues her story: “I lived on the street with my son. I kept it from everyone. That made it even more difficult. I had to steal food from stores so he could eat. I couldn't even eat myself. And then you also see that everyone around you is falling away. You can't knock on anyone's door anymore. Not even with authorities. All I could do was fight. You're going into a fight mode to make sure you don't lose your child.” Anasagasti hopes that SGH's approach will be resumed soon. She still has too little money to make ends meet. “There is never money for anything extra. I would love to go to Disneyland Paris with the kids again or buy a headstone for my mother's grave.”
