The benefits affair is perhaps one of the biggest political scandals of our time. Thousands of parents were wrongly identified as fraudsters, with far-reaching consequences such as deep debts and children being forced out of their homes due to rising tensions. For many victims, the suffering is still far from over.

Recovery hell

Rutger speaks to victims who are now in what they call “recovery hell.” Among them is Dylan, who, as a young teenager, had to take responsibility for his younger brothers. And also the sisters Shahira and Denise, who were damaged by the affair in their youth and were removed from home. The pain of this childhood continues to haunt them. In addition, we follow parents like Riemke, who is fighting to reunite with her daughter and the couple Renate and Jeroen, who not only lost their daughters due to eviction, but are also stuck in a years-long financial fight for recovery.

The ongoing fight for justice is taking its toll and there is no end in sight. How long can a person stay in combat mode, at the risk of being imprisoned in the role of a victim for life?

PowDoc: The Recovery Hell will be broadcast on November 5 at 22:15 on NPO 2 and can then be watched again via NPO Start.
