The benefits affair has had an enormous impact on those involved. Suddenly, many families were labeled as fraudsters with childcare allowance and had to pay back thousands of euros. And the worst part? Children were even unfairly removed from home by Youth Services. This is not fiction. This is the bitter reality of hundreds of parents in the Netherlands. The benefits affair — the biggest political scandal in years — has destroyed families. Not just financially, but also emotionally. And the consequences? Parents and children still feel that way every day.

Unfairly removed from home

The Committee on Allowances and Out-of-Home Placements, led by Mariëtte Hamer, which investigated the link between the benefits affair and evictions, is crystal clear: many children were wrongly removed from home, according to the AD. Youth Welfare has therefore made bad mistakes here. We barely looked at what was really going on in a family. “Many relationships between parents and children are still unrestored. The effects are felt every day.”

Three main conclusions

The report “Legacy of Injustice” shows three main conclusions:

  • The allowance affair has ruined families.
  • If there had been better assistance from Youth Welfare, many removals could have been prevented.
  • The children who were placed out of the home suffer from this to this day.

Children are also victims

What these children have experienced leaves deep marks. So the committee says: see these children not just as “children of affected parents”, but as independent victims. They deserve help, recognition and a fair chance of recovery.

Concerns

Those affected are afraid that little politics will do with this report. Mariëtte Hamer says about this: “That is also a very big concern for us, but we will put it down as firmly as possible tomorrow and will follow politically that they will make our recommendations.” Rachida was a victim of the benefits affair.
